The guy rode a 1090 and 1290 back to back and his thoughts seem to mirror yours. Yes the 1290 was an absolute blast, but he liked the 1090 a lot and didnt in anyway think it a slouch compared to the 1290. He prefered the front end feel and although the electronics of the 1290 meant he "took the piss", he did end up actually crashing it.
In stripped-down SX form, the 1,190cc, 72-degree, liquid-cooled twin is essentially the same specification as the one in the RX superbike. In the SX, the engine produced 154 hp and 84.6 pound-feet
1190 R vs 1090 R. Just want to check that I'm spotting the differences correctly! I believe the 1090 R has less power at 125 bhp, no centre stand so slightly lighter, no lean assist ABS which I think the 1190 R has. I think the 1090 R has improved front suspension and have gone to a PDS at the rear.
If talkign about power / speed then there is no comparison, had a Gen1 Super Tenere with a Full Arrow System and custom re-map on a dyno (about 12 - 15 BHP up on standard) and it was still a lot slower than the 1190 I swapped it for with the KTM out-gunning the S10 from as low as 3000 rpm and from about 5,000 rpm onwards the 1190 was MUCH faster.
Jul 18, 2012. Oddometer: 232. Location: moscow idaho. I'm trying to decide on my next bike also, the 1290sa is on my list also. In my area the closest used ones are 400 miles away and the price on them isn't that great. There are dealers also that have new ones but they are the same price as a leftover 1290r.
In my experience (personal riding and classes) for off road/back road use, the 1090 is a better fast bike, and the GS is a better slow bike. KTM is definitely a race bred machine, and I absolutely love them for that. The 1090 is generally a large dirt bike, and it soaks up the trail/ruts/road with ease and confidence.
